Top 13 Longest Video Games of 2019, Ranked by Average Completion Time

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

#13 – Code Vein

Recommended Videos
longest games, 2019

How long it takes to finish Code Vein depends a lot on a difficulty that you may or may not be affected by in your playthrough. Because of that, Code Vein will take you just around 30 to 40 hours to get through all 13 areas.

Of course, if you’re a #gamer that scoffs at the difficulty of any souls-like game, then it could take just under 25 hours or so.

Regardless, Code Vein is a joy to play especially if you’re into souls-like games with a little bit of a JRPG twist. You can find out more about this one by reading our glowing review.

#12 – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro is a hard game. Like, a very hard game. So, if it personally takes you over 60 hours to beat, we can’t really blame you. For the average person who finds the game difficult, finishing Sekiro will typically take 30 to 40 hours.

However, for those few of you who find Sekiro to not be difficult whatsoever, the game’s story can take as little as 28 hours to complete.

Though, regardless of difficulty, Sekiro is already a meaty game with plenty of boss encounters including a loud man on a horse. There are also quite a number of mini-bosses along the way so the finish time for Sekiro will widely vary.

#11 – Kingdom Hearts 3

longest games, 2019

In true JRPG fashion, Kingdom Hearts 3 is full of quite a lot of content and we’re not just talking about the large number of characters. Though, surprisingly, the story will take only around 28 hours.

According to the community, Kingdom Hearts 2 actually takes longer to beat. Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on your personal feelings on Kingdom Hearts 3 as a whole.

Regardless, Kingdom Hearts 3 will take up a good chunk of your time.

#10 – Phoenix Point

Made by the same creator of the original X-COM, Phoenix Point takes you through numerous turn-based missions that will raise your blood pressure as the X-COM games do.

If you’re especially into eerily Lovecraftian themes, then Phoenix Point may be a game to look into for turn-based fans and X-COM fans alike.

The main story will take just over 32 hours to complete so adding in the extra bits can clock you over 60 hours to finish. And if you want to 100% the game, you could see double that time.

#9 – Total War: Three Kingdoms

If you’re a history buff or you simply just like an RPG with complex characters, plenty of content, different playstyles, and a lot of personality, Three Kingdoms is where it’s at.

The story will take a little over 35 hours to beat and within that time you’ll be treated to lore so rich it hurts.

Three Kingdoms has some pretty great re-playability as well so we can’t blame you if you want to dive right back in once your first playthrough is done.

#8 – Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

Top 13 Longest Games of 2019, Ranked by Average Completion Time

The base game of Monster Hunter: World is already chock full of a whole lot of content that can take over 50 hours to complete.

Iceborne, its expansion, practically has just as much content, drawing in around 36 hours of playtime for the average player. Your play style and overall skill at beating all of the monsters really determines how fast you get through everything.

However, if you’re a part of a team, the game can easily be cut in half with some good old teamwork.

#7 – Days Gone

longest games, 2019

Whether you particularly like Days Gone or not, this open-world zombie game is actually a lot longer than you’d think.

Clocking in at just over 36 hours of story, it’ll treat you to some gorgeous scenery, great characters, creative weapons, and a nice narrative.

And, of course, we can’t forget about our darling protagonist who has a tendency to yell a little too much.

#6 – Death Stranding

longest games, 2019

Unsurprisingly, Death Stranding is a pretty long game. Not only does it have 14 episodes to get through, but it also has some pretty rocky terrain that is not easy to get over on foot. Add in the amount of cargo you’re carrying and you’ll be taking the long way around in the game.

Generally, Death Stranding will take a little over 39 hours to finish even with a straight run through the story. A la Kojima, the game has plenty of cutscenes in addition to lots of talking and walking so you’ll be sitting through quite a lot.

Regardless, there is a charm to Death Stranding that you won’t find in other games and sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy the scenery instead of rushing across America.

#5 – Fire Emblem: Three Houses

longest games, 2019

Fire Emblem: Three Houses has a lot of re-playability. There are, after all, three houses to pick from for each playthrough.

The game’s story on its own will take close to 47 hours to beat so take that as you may if you want to play as a different house your next playthrough.

For those of you that like to 100% games, this will be a game that you’ll spend quite some time sitting through. We’re talking over 100 hours. So, depending on how you take Fire Emblem: Three Houses, you’ll be making your home in front of the TV. Or, well, Switch.

#4 – Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth

persona q2, team gauge

This adorable little dungeon crawler takes you through an odd mystery that is full of that vibrant, over the top, and bright style the Persona series is known for.

And, of course, in long Persona fashion, this bad boy’s story takes over 48 hours to complete so don’t be fooled by its colorful facade.

It doesn’t reach Persona 5’s level of playtime but, for a game on the 3DS, 48 hours is a pretty long adventure.

#3 – Dragon Quest Builders 2

longest games, 2019

The Dragon Quest series has been around for a very long time. Generally, it likes to feature turn-based combat but the Dragon Quest Builders series takes a spin on the franchise by being sandbox action similar to Minecraft.

However, that doesn’t stop it from being just as long as many of the other games in the series. Dragon Quest Builders 2 will take you through a whopping 55 hours of story.

#2 – Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers

The Final Fantasy games, in general, are very long. Since Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO, the base game can take you over 90 hours to finish. Its expansion, Shadowbringers, adds in quite a lot more content in the same way Iceborne does for Monster Hunter: World.

On your own, Shadowbringers will net you over 60 hours of gameplay. Playstyle, teammates, and RNG can either help or hinder you in a playthrough and they can easily add a lot more time to your in-game clock.

There are plenty of bosses and quests to occupy your time and long-time Final Fantasy fans won’t be surprised at all with how long a Final Fantasy expansion can take.

#1 – The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

longest games, 2019

Our final entry, Trails of Cold Steel III is a turn-based third-person JRPG with a number of interesting characters and plenty of content.

In that good old JRPG fashion, it packs a long story into a big 65 hours of playtime so you’ll be sitting in front of the TV for quite some time. However, the Trails series has a large encompassing narrative that practically needs all 65 hours of this game to expand upon.

So, if you’re ready for a roller coaster, sit down, grab some popcorn, and get started.
