If you loved Pokémon Go and thought to yourself that the same premise could be used for Nintendo titles, you are not alone apparently. In a new partnership between Niantic and Nintendo, the pair have announced a new augmented reality game coming later this year starring none other than the adorable Pikmin.
A global launch is slated for 2021. However, before you get too excited, the in-development app does not even have a name yet. What we do know is that it will combine the utility of augmented reality with the undeniable attraction of Pikmin.
It will include gameplay activities that will encourage users to walk and make walking more delightful.
The development of this Pikmin app is led by the Niantic Tokyo Studio, which will be the first title created by the studio since its inception in 2018.
In a statement, both Nintendo and Niantic expressed their excitement for this new Pikmin venture.
“As we continue to expand our games portfolio, it was a natural next step to team up with Nintendo,” John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, explained. “We’re looking forward to shaping the future of AR together, bringing Nintendo’s beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world.”
“Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin are secretly living all around us”, Shigeru Miyamoto added/
“Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to provide people a new experience that’s different from traditional games. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.”
Pre-registration is already open, so if you are interested, just head on over.
The Pikmin app will also be the first of two more games that Niantic and Nintendo are collaborating together to make. Both are set to come out in 2021, but there are no details about the other potential project in the works.
