With innovations that The Pokemon Company is whipping up to improve our experience in the Pokemon world, for better or worse, they have decided to drop another piece of dead weight: Pokemon Global Link.

The Pokemon Company announced in a blog post on Monday that Pokemon Global Link will be shut down on Feb. 24, 2020 after nine years of operation. This means that once the service goes out of commission, you will no longer be able to use gameplay features required to connect to the PGL on Pokemon Sun and Moon and Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on the Nintendo 3DS.

Why not Pokemon Sword and Shield? Three months before the game’s first release on the Nintendo Switch, they said they’re planning to create services that will allow the game to support that are equivalent to the Rating Battles and Online Competitions on the PGL, but the game currently doesn’t and never will support the PGL, which explains why you have to participate in online Pokemon battles through a paywall, i.e. a Nintendo Switch Online Membership.

Every function from the PGL, from Rankings to the events calendar, will be ported over Pokemon Home, which will be available on iOS and Android early next year.

Don’t cry your crocodile tears just yet. According to Serebii.net, if you log in to your PGL account while playing Pokemon Sun and Moon between now and Feb. 24, you will receive a receive Munna based on Fennel’s Munna from Pokemon Black and White as thanks for using the service from day one.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
