Dr. Mario World is a free-to-play title where the goal is to match three of the same color to eliminate all the viruses from the board before running out of capsules. The puzzle game will contain five worlds to start, and Nintendo plans to add more after its release.

The game will have in-app purchases in the form of diamonds, which can be used to buy consumable items, continue a stage, and restore stamina.

Stamina will recharge over time, or players can receive the stamina hearts from friends over Line or Facebook. There is also a Versus mode for one-on-one competitive action.

Other playable doctors can be bought with diamonds or coins, earned in-game, and each have specialized skills such as clearing random columns or eliminating random objects.

Dr. Mario first appeared for the NES in 1990 and its sequel, Dr. Mario 64, for the Nintendo 64 in 2001, followed by other entries for DSiWare, WiiWare, and the Nintendo 3DS in 2015.

Dr. Mario World launches for iOS and Android on July 10, and pre-registration is now live for those who want to be notified when it is available to download.
