Override: Mech City Brawl

What do you get when you mix Transformers with Street Fighter? Well, something pretty close to Override: Mech City Brawl that has you duke it out in massive robot mechs in scaled city landscapes.

Not only is there four-player online and local co-op, there is an ability to combo the two for online as well. Along with a story campaign there is online competitive ranking, and the classic split-screen format to fight friends the old-fashioned way.

There is also a party co-op mode where four different people control four different parts of one mech and work together to try and fight an enemy as one cohesive unit. It’s pretty wacky and fun and is sure to get you and your friends either laughing or screaming at each other.

Override: Mech City Brawl released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on Dec. 4.

Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition

A port that is retailing for only $19.99, Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition comes with the base game and the Xtreme Legends expansion all in one title. Dynasty Warrios 7 originally released in 2011 on PS3, PSP, and Xbox One with the Xtreme Legends expansion arriving that same year and an Empires adaption releasing in Japan in 2012 and in North America in 2013.

Two player local co-op is supported during the entire story mode, as well as the Conquest, Legend, and Challenge modes. Even though all progress is saved to the first player’s account, the second player uses their own character and has access to any weapons already unlocked in the game.

Much of game’s DLC is also included in this edition, including the ability to hold two weapons instead of one, customize your weapons to your liking, level up your character, and choose to play as different historic Chinese figures within the Challenge and Legend modes.

Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition released for PC on Dec. 6.

Sequel to the extremely popular title that released originally for PS3 and PS Vita back in April 2013, Guacamelee! 2 takes you back to the Mexiverse in a platforming, Metroidvania-style adventure with the original luchador protagonist, Juan Aguacate.

Even though you have the option to play the entire game by yourself, two to four-player co-op is also available at any point in the game. You can simply drop in and out at anytime, but only local co-op is supported with no online functionality.

Guacamelee! 2 already released for PC and PS4 back in August 2018, but last month it also made it’s way onto Switch on Dec. 10 right after the release of the “Proving Grounds” DLC on Dec. 7 wherein you can fight your way through challenge levels with the help from five different trainers.

After you beat each trainer’s section, you will unlock their skin that grants new abilities, with the final super-secret skin unlocking at level 15.

The game is also set to release onto Xbox One and PC as a Play Anywhere Title on Jan. 18. Guacamelee! 2 will support cross-saves between these two platforms only.

Another title that has already been released elsewhere but came to a new platform last month is Warhammer: Vermintide 2 arriving for the first time on PS4.

Melee combat is the main focus in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 with brutal first-person gameplay fighting waves of horrible monsters. Using five unique heroes and 15 individual careers, you fight back against the growing Chaos army and Skaven horde using devastating, close-quarters weapons.

Four-player online co-op is available when playing through both the main campaign missions and side quests. Each player chooses a hero to fill a role for the team and then is free to customize their appearance and weapons to their play style.

Unfortunately, there is no local co-op available for Warhammer: Vermintide 2.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 released for PC in March 2018 and Xbox One in July 2018. Last month it finally came to PS4 on Dec. 18.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Unmistakably the largest co-op game release from last month was the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch.

Offering an incredible roster including every single character included in the series to date, Ultimate has 74 total fighters with DLC inclusions still to be added. You can check out the full list of fighters here.

There are over 100 stages with every single one also getting their own Battlefield and Final Destination versions. New music, items, assist trophies, and more are also added providing the most content in a Super Smash Bros. game ever.

Whether it be local or online, there is also no shortage of co-op fun to be had. Aside from the single-player campaign World of Light, Classic Mode can be played with friends as well as Versus with Team Battles. The best part of any Smash Bros. game is couch co-op brawling through, and in Ultimate up to eight players can fight against each other on any map whether it be timed, stocked, or whatever other tweaks you wish to include in the expansive customization menu.

Online play is also available with functionality working for up to four players. To find someone your level, you are matched according to your overall Global Smash Power (GSP) and preferred rules game rules. To play with a certain friend in mind, just have them registered as a friend on your Switch and you can set up a private room to fight together no matter how far away you are from each other.

Two players locally can also log online to fight together, whether it against one common enemy or in a free for all battle. For those who prefer to watch, there is also an online Spectator Mode if you just want to pick up some gameplay tips.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released for Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7.
