Crash Bandicoot and Nintendo Have Boosted the UK Retail Market for July

A good Summer for gamers.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the launch of the Nintendo Switch and its games have helped July 2017 have a better retail market than this time last year. July tends to be a pretty quiet month for video games and the only notable game released in July 2016 was Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This helped the UK video game market generate £21.5m in game sales for that month but this year has done a lot better.

As GamesIndustry.biz reports, July saw the UK games market earn £25.5m and it’s mainly thanks to Activision and Nintendo. Activision published the hugely successful Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in late June, which has spent over a month atop the UK game charts, despite only being available on the PS4.

The Nintendo Switch has also helped give the market a boost with games such as Splatoon 2. Though it only accounted for 9.7% of all physical games  sold in July, Nintendo came in at No. 1 in the UK due to the higher price of Switch software. Xbox One sold 24.9% of physical media and the PS4 sold 53.9%.

Summer usually tends to be a pretty dry period for video games but it seems like this year has bucked that trend. Later this month we’ll see several big releases such as Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. We’ll then be into the latter half of the year where there are some seriously big games coming out such as Destiny 2, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Call of Duty: WWII, and Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
