The level was cut from the original release in 1996 because it was deemed to be too difficult. It was completely finished but the development team couldn’t figure out how to reduce its difficulty before the game’s launch, so it was scrapped. But the data was still on the disc and tech savvy players could hack the game to access the additional challenge.

The level is an upwards climb through a typhoon, with platforms spinning and blades whirring. It hasn’t been adjusted for difficulty, which means that it will likely be the toughest Crash level in the collection. Even veterans of the series may have trouble.

The PlayStation Blog released a full interview with the level’s original designers, which delves into its creation, the decision to leave it out of the game, and what inspired them to bring it back. You can read it here.

Stormy Ascent will be available for free until August 19. if you don’t grab it before then it will cost you $2.99. The Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy is available now on Ps4.
