Mass Effect: Andromeda Getting Free Multiplayer DLC Maps

It'll be similar to Mass Effect 3, says BioWare.

Gamers won’t have to pay more to get more out of Mass Effect: Andromeda’s multiplayer. BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn revealed over the weekend that his studio’s upcoming sci-fi RPG will receive free multiplayer DLC maps, just like predecessor Mass Effect 3 did.

A Twitter user asked Flynn if gamers would have to fork over extra cash for Andromeda’s multiplayer maps or if they’d be free as they were in Mass Effect 3, and Flynn tweeted back “It’s going to be just like [Mass Effect 3].”

Flynn didn’t say anything more on the matter, so it’s not clear how many free DLC maps will be released or when they’ll become available. Twinfinite followed up with Flynn and will update this story if he offers any additional information.

For reference, BioWare released five free multiplayer packs for Mass Effect 3. The content included seven maps and a number of weapons, characters, and more across five releases from March 2012 through February 2013.

Of course, free DLC doesn’t mean BioWare won’t have any way to separate its customers from more of their money after their initial game purchase. In another move that’s similar to Mass Effect 3, the studio announced last year that Andromeda multiplayer would feature microtransactions. BioWare plans to sell multiplayer card packs for real money. Players can also unlock the cards, by simply playing the game, but that option will of course require a time investment.

Mass Effect: Andromeda will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 21.
