In an interview with Game Informer, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch will be able to support Micro SDXC cards. This means players will be able to increase the system storage space up to 2TB.

“Nintendo Switch is compatible with the SDXC standard, which supports up to 2TB,” a representative said. Nintendo has said that while 2TB Micro SDXC cards are not yet available to buy, the Switch will be able to support them when they do come to market.

At the moment, the largest Micro SDXC card that you can buy is 256GB and these are around $200 at most major retailers. At Nintendo’s Treehouse Live event stream just last week, a 256GB card was used with the Switch.

The console ships with 32GB of internal memory. Taking into account the size of the operating system and the relatively beefy size of the games (Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a 13.4GB download), players who want to buy games from the digital store will need to look at storage expansion pretty quickly.
