It’s finally real. Fans can dispense with searching for clues and guessing at not-so-subtle hints, because Ubisoft officially confirmed today that work is underway on a brand new Beyond Good & Evil game.

“If you’ve been waiting for news about [Beyond Good & Evil],” Ubisoft wrote on the game’s official Facebook page early this morning, “well, here you go! We are delighted to confirm that Michel Ancel is currently working with the Ubisoft Montpellier Studio on a new Beyond Good & Evil game.”

Michel Ancel was the creator behind the original Beyond Good & Evil, which released all the way back in 2003 and became a cult favorite. Fans have been clamoring for a follow-up ever since and just recently began seeing some of the first evidence in many years they might get one.

Last week, Ancel took to Instagram to post a picture of what appeared to be a young Pey’j, a bipedal pig from the original game. In the image, which you can see at the top of this story, Pey’j is sitting on the back of a man whom fans began guessing was the father of Jade, who starred in the 2003 game.

Speculation further intensified when Ancel teased fans with more concept art postings on Instagram, one of which depicted a rhinoceros-like Mammago. Ancel captioned that image “Endangered species — now saved — Game in pre-production – Stay tuned!” The game developer didn’t say which game was in pre-production, but it seemed apparent that he was referring to a new Beyond Good & Evil.

Ubisoft, though, did not confirm as much until today. Instead, the publisher had stuck only to encouraging fans to follow Ancel’s Instagram account. Ubisoft did announce in 2008 that Beyond Good & Evil 2 was in development and occasionally maintained that a new game in the series was still coming at some point, but today marks the publisher’s first official confirmation of one in about eight years.
