Naruto Online is the brand new, officially licensed MMORPG based on the popular anime series. Players get to step into the sandals of a brand new ninja created just for the game as they join Naruto and friends on a journey to defeat evil and transform the ninja world. It’s a free-to-play game that you can play right in your browser by going to the Naruto Online website.

All you need to do is input your email address, create a password, and choose a server. Once that’s all done you’re ready to begin.

Select Your Shinobi

Once you’re logged in and the game starts loading, you’re ready to start playing. The first thing you will need to do is select your main character. You will not be able to choose any existing character for Naruto Online; instead, five brand new characters were created, each specializing in a different element.

  • Azure Fang (Water) – Medial ninja specializing in healing teammates and poisoning enemies. Good for crowd control.
  • Breeze Dancer (Wind) – A powerful DPS ninja that uses wind for powerful attacks, and shadow clone justu to keep combos going.
  • Midnight Blade (Lightning) – High DPS but single focus. Not useful against groups, but can deal lots of damage to one target. Also does well on the defense front, able to protect self from all status effects.
  • Scarlet Blaze (Fire) – Useful for locating enemy weaknesses and for bolstering attacks of Fire teammates. Good at striking single enemies and dealing with small groups. Great combo skills.
  • Crimson Fist (Earth) – Close-quarters combat is this ninja’s specialty, and serves as a great tank. High defense, protective earth jutsu, and the ability to manage small groups.

Pick the ninja that best suits your usual playstyle. Don’t worry too much if you aren’t sure, though. Pick whoever appeals most and if you need more help in certain areas, you’ll be able to build your team around your weaknesses.

How Do You Play?

Now that you’re logged in and have your character selected, you just have to get out there and play. Thankfully, playing the game is pretty easy. You’ll be dropped into the Hidden Leaf Village, and from there you’ll be able to accept quests and embark on Instances, which are what Naruto Online calls missions.

On the right side of your screen you’ll notice a Mission List. This stays updated with everything you’re currently able to do in Naruto Online. If you need to do something, simply click it in the list and your character will automatically start running towards the quest giver or the location of your mission. Once you accept a mission, simply complete what’s asked and you’ll earn experience, items, gear, and even extra characters to place into your team. Missions come in the form of battles, exploration, collection, or just watching events.

There are a few side activities you can get into for big rewards. One is the Ninja Exam, which is a gauntlet of battles you can run through for experience and Magatama (jewels that power up your gear). There’s also the Arena, where you can try your skills against other players (this unlocks after you level up), and other events to keep you occupied.

Everything is accessed through a simple click of a menu, so there is no worry of getting lost. When in doubt, simply click the Mission List and you’ll be back on track.

Combat

Combat in Naruto Online is a bit different than what you’d expect from your typical MMO. It’s not exactly turn based, but everyone attacks on a set schedule. You can influence your team’s attacks using special abilities and combos. Special abilities are obtained by leveling your own character up, and from increasing the star ratings of your recruited ninjas.

Combos are formed in different ways. The most typical combo in Naruto Online comes from bonds. These are when you take two ninjas that have some sort of relationship and place them next to each other when setting up your team layout. When one character in the bond pulls off a specific attack, the other(s) will follow to form a string of attacks that are separate from their standard attacks. When used properly, this can lead to large combat streams where each ninja attacks more than once during your turn.

The other way to form combos is through special conditions. Every character has abilities and attacks that trigger automatically when an enemy is either knocked back, launched into the air, or knocked down. On top of that, some attacks are triggered when a certain combo threshold his met. For example: the fire type starter has an attack that triggers once the combo goes above 10, he also has an attack that triggers if an opponent is knocked into the air by an adjacent enemy.

Play around with the placement of your ninjas and the makeup of your team, and you’ll find yourself demolishing any shinobi or monster that dares to get in your path.

Building Your Team

Building your team will prove to be crucial when playing Naruto Online. There is a large number of ninjas that you can recruit throughout the game, and each one has its own particular set of skills and special abilities that you can leverage in combat. On top of that, where you place those ninjas in your formation is very important.

To recruit new ninjas you have several options. The first is to play through the story. Some ninjas will be given to you for free upon the completion of certain missions. You’ll also earn a few Ninja Fragments in order to recruit others, so always keep an eye out for reward opportunities.

Another way to grow your team is to use Bond and Seal Scrolls. These allow you to take a lucky draw. You have the opportunity to obtain money, items, gear, or even a high level ninja to add to your roster. Try to collect as many ninjas as you can so that you can have more options when forming your team for specific challenges.

When you have the ninjas you want, use them regularly and feed them food items you find to level them up. Keep in mind that only those in battle earn experience during missions, so swap them out if you want to keep a particular set of Naruto Online ninjas powered up.

Multiplayer

Seeing as how Naruto Online is an MMO, it provides the ability to play with others. Multiplayer is at the core of the game, but don’t worry if you just want to enjoy the story. You can play the main campaign on your own without the need for others. But, if you want to do absolutely everything that Naruto Online has to offer, you’re going to have to join other shinobi in some activities.

Having friends will allow you to utilize the Ninja Task Room, which allows you to assign someone to a certain quest so you both reap the rewards. You can also water each other’s trees to earn benefits such as money and useful items. If you want to take friend participation to the next level, you can always make or join a group. Groups are Naruto Online’s clans and they’re the only way to participate in Team Instances like Plunders and Convoys.

The other side of Naruto Online’s multiplayer is PvP. This allows you to test your skills against other players to earn rewards and bragging rights. The standard PvP lets you test your might as much as you want, allowing you to earn currency to purchase useful items. Ranked mode, however, allows you to challenge players for their place on the leaderboards once every 10 minutes (and only five times in a day). This mode yields even greater rewards than standard PvP, but the lack of control given to the player means you need to perfectly set up your team before sending them out to battle.

These are the basics of Naruto Online. In time you’ll find yourself becoming a ninja master.
