Developer Niantic, Inc. makes clear that the field test will be an unfinished version of the full game, and missing key features of the final release. There is also no guarantee of getting into the field test after signing up.

Niantic also laid out some factors to consider to those signing up, like that the field test only supports Android (version 4.3 or later) and iPhone (iPhone 5 or new with iOS8).

Progress made while participating in the field test will not carry over to the public launch, and content will be wiped several times throughout the test. A clear beginning and end date for this beta period is not given, but they state that the signup period could end without prior notice, so jump on it now if interested.

Niantic and The Pokemon Company seem devoted to launching globally without issue later this year. “Because the game involves numerous people playing in multiple countries at the same time, we have a lot to test before we publicly launch,” said Niantic in the signup post.
