Who Dies in House of the Dragon?

Death is practically a tradition in George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones, and House of the Dragon isn’t any different. No character is safe when the Iron Throne is involved, and the death count is already rising despite the series being in its infancy. Keeping in mind that spoilers are ahead, here’s who dies in House of the Dragon, including Fire & Blood.

All Deaths in House of the Dragon

We’ve just seen the season one finale of House of the Dragon, and there have been plenty of deaths since then. As of Oct. 24, 2022, here is every person that has died so far, what caused it, and in which episode.

  • Queen Aemma Arryn – Died giving birth to Baelon Targaryen via c-section (The Heirs of the Dragon; Season 1, Episode 1).
  • Prince Baelon Targaryen – Died of complications stemming from childbirth (The Heirs of the Dragon; Season 1, Episode 1).
  • Lady Hightower – Died pre-House of the Dragon.
  • Ser Ryam Redwyne – Died in his sleep (The Rogue Prince; Season 1, Episode 2).
  • Craghas Draher, the Crabfeeder – Killed by Daemon Targaryen (Second of His Name; Season 1, Episode 3).
  • Lady Rhea Royce – Murdered by Daemon Targaryen (We Light the Way; Season 1, Episode 5).
  • Joffrey Lonmouth – Murdered by Ser Criston Cole (We Light the Way; Season 1, Episode 5).
  • Laena Velaryon – Commanded Vhagar to burn her with dragonfire (The Princess and the Queen; Season 1, Episode 6).
  • Grand Maester Mellos – Died between Episode 5 and 6 of Season 1, during the time skip. The cause of death hasn’t been mentioned.
  • Lyonel Strong – Burned to death at Harrenhal (The Princess and the Queen; Season 1, Episode 6).
  • Harwin Strong – Burned to death at Harrenhal (The Princess and the Queen; Season 1, Episode 6).
  • Vaemond Velaryon – Murdered by Daemon Targaryen (The Lord of the Tides; Season 1, Episode 8).
  • Viserys Targaryen – Died of leprosy infection (The Lord of the Tides; Season 1, Episode 8).
  • Lyman Beesbury – Murdered by Ser Criston Cole (The Green Council; Season 1, Episode 9).
  • Allun Caswell – Hanged in the Red Keep (The Green Council; Season 1, Episode 9).
  • Lucerys Velaryon – Killed by Vhagar, along with his dragon, Arrax (The Black Queen; Season 1, Episode 10).
  • Visenya Targaryen – Stillborn (The Black Queen; Season 1, Episode 10).

Out of the deaths listed above, Queen Aemma Arryn and Prince Baelon Targaryen have the most impact on House of the Dragon, considering their deaths ultimately lead to the Dance of the Dragons.

If the following deaths are expected to pan out the same way, then death is surely on the horizon. Listed below is every character that has been introduced in House of the Dragon so far, along with how they died in the source material, Fire & Blood.

  • Queen Aemma Arryn – Died giving birth to Baelon Targaryen via c-section.
  • Prince Baelon Targaryen – Died of complications during childbirth.
  • Lady Hightower – Dead, though as to how is never mentioned.
  • Ser Ryam Redwyne – Died, likely of old age.
  • Rhaenyra Targaryen – Eat by the dragon, Sunfyre, at Aegon II Targaryen’s command
  • Daemon Targaryen – Assumed dead during The Battle Above the Gods Eye, after leaping off his dragon and plunging to his death.
  • Alicent Hightower – Died of Winter Fever.
  • Ser Harrold Westerling – Died of old age.
  • King Viserys I Targaryen – Died of infection caused by cuts from the Iron Throne.
  • Princess Rhaenys Targaryen – Burned to death during a battle with dragons above Rook’s Rest.
  • Lady Laena Velaryon – Died giving birth to an unnamed child.
  • Otto Hightower – Beheaded by Rhaenyra.
  • Mysaria – Whipped to death attempting to flee King’s Landing.
  • Corlys Velaryon – Died of old age.
  • Ser Criston Cole – Killed by arrows, at Longleaf the Lionslayer’s command.
  • Lord Lyonel Strong – Died in an accidental fire at Harrenhal.
  • Harwin Strong – Died in an accidental fire at Harrenhal.
  • Grand Maester Mellos – Died climbing steps in King’s Landing.
  • Lord Lyman Beesbury – Three acounts of his death give a different story; he either died of a child in the black cells, Criston Cole slit his throat, or he was thrown out a window by Criston.
  • Laenor Velaryon – Killed by Ser Qarl Correy, a friend of Laenor.
  • Hobert Hightower – Killed by poisoned wine.
  • Lord Rickon Stark – Died outside Sunspear during the Conquest of Dorne.
  • Allun Caswell – Beheaded for refusing to renounce is oath to Rhaenyra.
  • Vaemond Velaryon – Beheaded by Daemon.
  • Lucerys Velaryon – Killed by Vhagar.
  • Jacaerys Velaryon – Killed during the Battle of the Gullet by crossbows, then sank in the sea.
  • Joffrey Velaryon – Died falling from Syrax.
  • Aegon “the Elder” II Targaryen – Murder via poison.
  • Aegon “the Younger” III Targaryen – Died of consumption.
  • Viserys II Targaryen – Died of an illness (suspected poisoning).
  • Baela Targaryen – Died during childbirth.
  • Rhaena Targaryen – Died of old age.
