Out of all of Minecraft’s farmable materials, none are as fickle as the mushroom. This finicky fungus only grows in specific conditions, some of which can pose a health risk to your character. This guide should tell you everything you need to know about how to grow mushrooms in Minecraft.
How to Grow Mushrooms in Minecraft
There are two main types of mushrooms in Minecraft: huge and small. Regardless of which type you want to farm, it’s going to be a massive pain in the hiney, especially since you need to be mindful of the light levels while managing mob spawns at the same time.
That’s where we come in. We’ll go over how to grow both huge and small mushrooms down below.
Growing Huge Mushrooms
First off, you can use bone meal on red or brown mushrooms to get a huge mushroom to grow. Assuming the mushroom has enough room to grow, and it’s planted on a dirt, grass, podzol, mycelium, or nylium block, this is a good way to go.
- Set aside a 7x7x8 space, and make sure you have suitable blocks to grow your mushrooms on.
The above mentioned blocks will work, though podzol blocks are more readily available if you’re exploring the open-world.
- Plant a mushroom on your podzol block.
- Use your bonemeal on the mushroom, then wait for it to grow.
- Place another podzol block once you’ve harvested your mushroom, then repeat the process.
You can automate the farming process by making use of mycelium or nylium blocks instead, as these will spread to the dirt, but they’re a lot harder to come by.
Growing Small Mushrooms
Small mushrooms are a little easier to grow, but you need to be mindful of the light levels. Mushrooms will not grow when the light level is greater than 12, so you’ll need to think about where you want to place your farm while also considering how much light to let in to prevent mobs from spawning.
There are a few ways to get around this problem, as listed below:
- Using soul torches, which only reach light level 10 and will prevent mobs from spawning
- Place normal torches two blocks above where your mushrooms are growing
- Make your mushroom farm just one block high and pave the walkways with slabs, then use a water system to funnel your mushrooms to a safe collection point
That last method takes a lot more work, even if it might be the most efficient way of automating the process, so we’d recommend just going with the soul torches route for beginners. Once you have your farming area set up, plant the mushroom seeds and just wait for them to grow and harvest them.
