Market intelligence company Sensor Tower has published a new report today on the recent meteoric rise in popularity of the free-to-play (on mobile) party game Among Us. Its data estimates the game’s total downloads have now reached 86.3 million on the platform.
Among Us’s increase in players over the past few months has been unprecedented; first released in 2018, its total player count numbered in the hundreds for over a year before surging over this summer. July to August, for example, saw a whopping 661 percent month-over-month increase in downloads to 18.4 million.
Sensor Tower’s report reads:
“From September 1 to 14, 2020, new installs are currently up 127 percent M/M to close to 42 million, with the last half of the month still to go. The 45 day period in August and September account for 70 percent of the game’s lifetime downloads.”
Top downloads by region are led by the US with 20.5 million, followed closely by Brazil and Mexico with 16.6 and 6 million respectively. Most users are playing on Android devices, with 60.4 million downloads from Google Play.
As for revenue, Sensor Tower estimates Among Us has generation $3.2 million, mostly from in app purchases like the Mini Crewmate bundle, as well as the option to remove in-game ads.
As reported earlier this week, Steamchart figures from this month show Among Us hit a peak concurrent player count of over 300,000, up from just 431 this time last year. Notably, Among Us isn’t free-to-play on Steam, costing $4.99.
Those numbers were drawn to Twinfinite’s attention by analysts at Githyp, who suggested that Among Us has benefited from COVID-19 lockdown measures, with popular influencers collaborating to play the game together on streaming platforms like Twitch. The game’s cross-platform functionality has also made things easy, offering an eight player multiplayer eperience across PC and mobile.
Sensor Tower’s own summary draws a similar conclusion:
“Despite a slow release, InnerSloth continued to provide updates for the game, launched it on PC, and has managed to make Among Us one of 2020’s big hits, thanks to the team’s persistence and for the steady increase in coverage by content creators around the world.”
