There are a wealth of different skills you can discover in Shenmue 3, but it’s not always clear how you’re supposed to unlock them. That’s why we’re here to show you how to learn more skills in Shenmue 3.
Learning Skills in Shenmue 3
Like with past entries in the series, Shenmue 3 allows you to learn new skills through the use of Skill Books. These books contain the information necessary for Ryu to learn new combos, and once obtained and used will add said combos to your available moves permanently.
However, obtaining skill books works a bit differently than it did in past entries.
There are now two different methods you have for getting them: You can either purchase Skill Books directly from your inventory or buy them from shops found throughout the game.
Both methods are viable and easy enough to do, but still require a bit of know-how to properly navigate your way through.
How to Purchase Skill Books From Your Inventory
For purchasing Skill Books directly from your inventory in Shenmue 3, you’ll need to access its specific menu. To do so, press the R1 button and then cycle over to the Skill Book Exchange tab.
Once you select it, you’ll be brought to a menu showing you the different skills you can unlock. Each is unlocked by exchanging a specific set of items you can find throughout the game, from different herbs to capsule prizes and other random purchasable items. You’ll only be able to unlock a Skill Book if you have all of the necessary items.
If you have all of the necessary items though, then all you have to do is select the Skill Book you wish to obtain and confirm that you want to exchange your items for it. Once you do, you’ll be given that Skill Book and be able to learn the Skills contained within it.
So, to recap how you purchase Skill Books from your inventory in Shenue 3:
- Open the Inventory Screen with R1
This is where you’ll find the Skill Book Exchange tab.
- Cycle over to the Skill Book Exchange tab and select it
Doing so will bring you to a new menu where you can exchange items for Skill Books.
- Select the Skill Book you want and exchange the necessary items from your inventory
You’ll only be able to unlock a given skill if you have all of the necessary items.
How to Purchase Skill Books from Shops in Shenmue 3
As for purchasing Skill Books from shops in Shenmue 3, it’s as simple and straightforward as it sounds.
When you happen upon one of the shops throughout the game’s world, you can cycle through their inventory to find Skill Books for sale. When you do, you can buy it for a certain amount of money, learning the skill it contains after it has been added to your inventory.
