Death Stranding: How to Change Footwear & Why It’s Important

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Sam’s going to do a lot of walking in Death Stranding, and unfortunately, the terrain isn’t exactly easygoing. He’s going to get tired, have to use ladders and rope anchors to get around, and keep his balance to prevent his cargo from getting damaged. Footwear is actually pretty important in Death Stranding. Here’s how to change footwear in Death Stranding and why it’s important.

Changing Footwear in Death Stranding

To change footwear, hold up on the d-pad, use the right stick to select your footwear on the wheel, and then press X to change footwear. It’s worth noting that you can only do this if you actually have a spare pair of boots or shoes with Sam when he’s out adventuring, so always be sure to add some to his equipment before heading out.

How to Get More Shoes in Death Stranding

Boots can be fabricated at a terminal towards the end of Episode 2 as you progress through the story. After this point, you’ll then be able to fabricate the Bridges Boots Lvl. 1 for 8 resin each whenever you need them.

Shoes can also be stolen back from enemies, or collected from postboxes if other players within your Chiral Network have been so generous.

Why Footwear’s Important

Once you’ve got through the opening sections of Death Stranding, you’ll eventually notice that a blue gauge appears in the bottom left corner of the screen. This gauge represents the durability of your boots.

If this gauge depletes completely, your footwear will have completely worn out and Sam’s feet will begin to hurt. This will eventually cause them to begin bleeding, which will lower the amount of blood/ health that Sam has, and can eventually kill him.
