Death Stranding: How to Change Character Appearance

The release of Death Stranding is exciting for several reasons, chief among them being that this is Hideo Kojima’s first original project since finishing work on Metal Gear Solid V and his departure from Konami. The game stars Norman Reedus as main protagonist Sam, and you have some control over the way he looks. Here’s how to change character appearance in Death Stranding.

How to Change Character Appearance in Death Stranding

At the start of the game, you won’t have that many options for customizing Sam’s appearance. You’ll only have the Ludens sunglasses in your inventory, along with a black Bridges cap that you can get after completing a few story missions.

To change Sam’s character appearance in Death Stranding, you can equip these cosmetic items to spice up his look a little so he doesn’t look so vanilla.

There are two ways to do this: the first is by entering a Private Room at any of the main outposts in the world, and using the right stick to look at the bedside table. From here, you can have Sam equip the cap or sunglasses, or both.

When you’re out in the open world, you can hold up on the d-pad, then use the right stick to select the cap or the sunglasses, and press the X button to confirm that you want to equip (or remove) the cosmetic item.

This will immediately change Sam’s character appearance in the game, giving you some control over the way you want to customize him and change the way he looks. As you play through the game, you’ll unlock more cosmetic options to further mix up his look, including the otter cap that you can get if you happen to find Conan O’Brien himself in the game.

To recap, here’s how to change character appearance in Death Stranding:

  1. From the Private Room, examine the bedside table to equip any cosmetic items you have there.

  2. While in the open world, hold up on the d-pad and use the right stick to select your cap or sunglasses, then press X to equip them.
