August NPD: Switch Continues to Dominate, but Overall Software Sales hit 20-Year Low

The NPD Group has revealed its tracking of US retail and digital video game sales in August, 2019, and it’s been another impressive period for the Nintendo Switch. The console beat out PS4 and Xbox One again, keeping its spot as the best-selling hardware of 2019. Software sales overall, however, hit a record low across all systems.

Analyst Matt Piscatella was once again on hand to provide data and supporting commentary.

“Nintendo Switch was again the best-selling hardware platform of August and remains the best-selling platform of 2019,” Piscatella said. “Nintendo Switch is the only platform with sales gains both in August as well as year to date.”

Notably, five of the top 10 best-selling video games of August 2019 are Nintendo platform exclusives.

However, overall, software sales are down, not only year-on-year but dropping to their lowest to their “lowest level since 1998.” Piscatella explains:

“Dollar sales of tracked video game software fell 22 percent in August versus a year ago, to $257 million. This represents the lowest total software sales in an August month since August 1998, which was $234 million.”
