The Red Lantern made its debut at this year’s Nindie Showcase, plunging players into a life or death struggle for survival with an enrapturing reveal trailer.
Developed by Timberline Studio, the game places players in the role of a young woman who hasn’t achieved as much as she’d like. To this end, she aims to complete the Iditarod race and achieve a lifelong goal she has had since she was a child.
Unfortunately, things quickly fall apart along the way. In addition to colliding with a tree, she and her dogs are attacked by a bear, which kills several of the dogs she needs to escape the wilderness.
As a result, she is left to find her way to safety, braving the elements while also coming to terms with a new failure added to the growing list from the span of her life.
The title is reminiscent of Firewatch, from its art style to the more character and setting-focused narrative, yet also displays plenty of personality that makes it a title all its own.
