Steam is Adding an Events Page and Redesigning the Library

Valve announced during their Game Developers Conference event today that they are adding an events page to Steam and redesigning the platform’s library.

The new events feature was created with the purpose of making it easy for users to stay up to date with their favorite games. During the GDC talk, Valve’s Alden Kroll provided the following statement about the new page:

“We think of this as the way developers will be able to communicate with players through Steam. We want to build the foundation for a communication platform where all the interesting things that are happening in games can find their way to the customers. And the customers that are interested in finding out ‘what’s happening in games in my library, what kind of events are happening, what’s been updated recently, what are my friends doing,’ making all that much easier for players to be able to find.”

This new page will show you the latest on games that you follow, have in your library, or Steam’s recommendation system thinks you would enjoy. You will be able to sort which titles you want to see and set up event notifications through Google Calendar, iCal, Steam client notifications, Email, Text message, and the Steam mobile app.

As for the redesigned Library, the main changes being made will add the ability to search and organize games via the Steam store tag system, integrate your friends list into the library, add a recently played section, and categorize your complete collection into a group of vertical thumbnails.

Valve will start an open beta for the events page in the next couple months and is hoping to run a beta for the new library this summer.
