Today Nihon Falcom announced Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, a brand new JRPG of the beloved Ys franchise.
The game, which has been hinted at for a short while with a teaser website, is in development by the same team behind Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. It’s planned for a release in Japan in 2019 for PS4. It will start a completely new series within the franchise.
The game is set in Bardeuk, in the Gria Ertringen province of northern Esteria. In a massive city defined “Prison City” a new adventurer will be set against many different monsters called “Monstrum” and will face many mysteries.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox will include the fluid and fast battle system the Ys series is known for, and players will be able to fight against huge bosses called “Kaijin.” Further new elements enable vertical exploration with the “Traverse Actions,” while “Guild Operations” will be available in the city. Many new mechanics closely linked with the setting will be introduced.
The press release also brings up relevant questions: Who are the Monstrum that appeared in town? What is the secret behind this Prison City? And what happened to the redhead adventurer Adol Christin?
You can check out the first images of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox below, which show the Prison City, the new protagonist, and tease some of the characters we’ll meet in the game.
