During today’s Smash Direct Nintendo revealed a brand new feature for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Spirits and Spirit Battles. Spirits is the mysterious final mode listen on the main screen of Smash Bros. Ultimate. During the Direct Masahiro Sakurai, director of the game, said Spirits were a way for fans to enjoy the various characters of each series outside of playable characters.
While it’s all a little complicated, basically you can equip Spirits on your playable characters to boost their stats or add a variety of effects/boosts on. These Spirits run a wide array of characters from both mainline games and smaller ones, like Cranky Kong from Donkey Kong or Owain from Fire Emblem. Spirit Battles are the unique mode that lets you use your Spirits against unique NPCs.
These battles will add unique sets of Spirits to the enemy and create diverse battles. Spirits mode will also let you play against other players that are using Spirits, allowing for a wide array of combinations.
