How to Change Clothes & Get Outfits in Red Dead Redemption 2
While fashion in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 might be very different from the world we live in now in 2018, it does not make style any less important. You’re still going to be expected to look your 1890’s best, and rock the latest trends in clothes and outfits. Here’s how to change your clothes & outfits in Red Dead Redemption 2.
You start out with your standard looking outlaw living on the frontier look, but you don’t have to wait long to change outfits.
How to Buy Clothes & Outfits
Starting with Valentine, and then moving onto just about any town in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can visit the general store to purchase new clothes and outfits from the catalog.
Simply wander on over to the counter, and press L2/LT to interact with the shopkeep, and then hit the prompt to browse the catalog. From there, you’ll be able to browse all of the available clothes, hats, and outfits, among other things on offer.
There’s a lot to choose from, and it can get pricey. Consider also whether you need winter, or summer clothes, as that does make a difference to your cores.
How to Change Clothes
You can change clothes at both the general store where you bought your new outfit, or in your own personal wardrobe by your bed at camp. Anything you buy from the general store, or earn via a quest or random activity, is permanently added to your wardrobe. So don’t worry about having to rebuy it.
Interact with the wardrobe chest using Triangle/Y when you approach it, and then you can browse through all of the clothes that you own and create your own style.
You can mix and match different clothes, and save an outfit for future ease of access by pressing R3. And again, if you’re looking for new styles, and have some cash on hand, you can pick them up at the general store.
How to Get a New Hat
Your hat plays by slightly different rules. You can actually lose your hat in a gun or fistfight in Red Dead Redemption 2. It will naturally fall off during intense battles, and you’ll need to recover it if you want it back. You can do that by walking over to it and pressing and holding Square/X.
However, that opportunity might not arise, and you’ll have to leave your hat behind. There are potentially more important things to worry about than going back and grabbing a hat if a mission is on the line.
To get a new hat, simply follow the directions above for buying clothes & outfits. The general store also contains hats that you can peruse. You could stick with the rugged outlaw look with some cowboy hats. Or, you could make yourself look more like a higher society type, with some slicked back hair and a bowler-looking cap.
Keep in mind though, as long as the hat that you lost was yours (and not stolen off of a dead body), you don’t have rebuy your hat every time. Your wardrobe contains your entire collection of hats that you can re-obtain at any time.
You can also keep up to three hats stored on your horse. The hats that are stored on your horse are managed in your wardrobe at camp. Let’s get into that speaking of which.
How to Remove and Add Outfits & Hats from Horse Storage
You can keep outfits and hats stored on your horse for quick access in Red Dead Redemption 2. To do that, return to your wardrobe at camp, and browse through the various hats and outfits you have. Select the hat you want to store. From there you can either press Square/ X to remove or add it to your horse storage depending on whether it’s currently stored or not.
You can only have up to three outfits and hats stored at a time. Arthur’s Gambler’s Hat is always stored on your horse no matter what.
It’s wise to keep a hat and outfit for both cold, hot, and average temperatures, that way your health and stamina core are always in tip top condition.
