What Coins Do and Unlock in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Recommended Videos

While racing around the various tracks in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe you’ll see a bunch of coins scattered about. These coins have a couple of different uses, one during races and one out of races. Here’s what you need to know.

You can carry up to 10 coins at any given time during a race, and the more coins you have, the faster your cart will go. It isn’t going to be a drastic change, but having 10 coins can give you that little edge during a race, which is why you’ll want to pick them up whenever you have the chance. Keep in mind, however, that any time you get hit by another racer’s item, you’ll lose three coins.

All the coins you pick up during a race will add to your overall count, which is used to unlock new customization parts for your karts. You’ll automatically unlock these parts based on the number of coins you have including new kart bodies, wheels, and paragliders. You can check your total coin count by going to “Player Stats” at the bottom of the main menu in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
