Today during the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party, SEGA revealed Sonic Mania, a brand new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game with classic 2D visuals. The game will be made by Sonic Team in partnership with Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, the folks behind the well-received ports of the original Genesis games, along with independent developer PagodaWest Games.

Sonic Mania will feature all new stages and re-imagined versions of classic stages as well such as Green Hill Zone. In-addition to Sonic, players will also be able to play as Tails and Knuckles as well. You can check out the trailer below.

Gameplay was shown in the short trailer, and it looks awfully similar to the gameplay of old; good news for the fans that have wanted a return to that style of gameplay for years now. According to Aaron Webber, Sonic’s social media handler, the physics from the original games are also back.

Sonic will have at least one new move though, the drop dash, which allows Sonic to jump in the air come back down into a dash.

While loyal fans have been through the Sonic Cycle countless times now, it seems that finally SEGA might be giving the fans exactly what they want.

Sonic Mania currently has a spring 2017 release window.
