We Happy Few
Best PS4 Games to Have on Your Radar in August 2018
We Happy Few has undergone some big changes since it released in Early Access in 2016 on Xbox One and PC. The dystopic world definitely draws a few similarities to BioShock, as does the overall creepy atmosphere and first-person point of view. The game takes place in an alternate timeline after World War II, where Germany establishes itself as second German Empire and successfully invades Great Britain.
You play as three different characters living on the island of Wellington Wells, where a hallucinogenic drug known as Joy is used to suppress everyone’s bad memories and keep them in a state of euphoria. Early Access showed some interesting ideas in terms of survival gameplay and roguelike elements, scavenging for tools, weapons, food, and water, all of which are necessary to your survival. The most recent trailers for the game, however, have started showing off some of the more interesting narrative bits. We Happy Few certainly nails its look and tone, and hopefully it’ll be able to deliver on all other fronts as well.
Madden NFL 19
Best PS4 Games to Have on Your Radar in August 2018
Madden is one of the top sports franchises out there, and for good reason. Despite releasing every year, most entries in the franchise try to shake things up in some way, and Madden NFL 19 looks like it’ll have a few tricks up its sleeve. Outside of the obvious graphical improvements, the new title will feature “real player motions” that lets players push blockers to get a few extra yards while running, or make realistic cuts upfield after a catch. There will also be interactive touchdown celebrations, for the first time since Madden NFL 09.
Madden NFL 19 will come packed with all the features and modes you’d expect, as well as a sequel to Madden NFL 18’s Longshot story mode. 19 continues the story from the last game, but will put more of an emphasis on football gameplay and NFL-related events. By all regards, Madden NFL 19 looks to be a robust package, and one that football fans should definitely pick up.
The Walking Dead – The Final Season – Episode 1
Best PS4 Games to Have on Your Radar in August 2018
It’s been a long and emotional journey for fans of Telltale’s The Walking Dead, but finally, the story of Clementine is coming to an end this year. This final season picks up after Season 3, with Clementine now a fierce and capable survivor. She discovers a secluded school that might finally serve as home for her and AJ, but as you might expect, things are never quite that simple in The Walking Dead.
Graphically, the final season is probably Telltale’s best-looking game yet, as they’ve doubled down on the comic book aesthetic. There are still plenty of gut-wrenching choices to make, and a new over-the-shoulder camera system helps ramp up the tension even more. If you haven’t caught up with the previous season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead now’s the time to do so, as this is one experience you won’t want to miss.
Little Dragons Cafe
Best PS4 Games to Have on Your Radar in August 2018
Little Dragons Cafe comes from the mind of Yasuhiro Wada, the mind behind the beloved farm-sim series Harvest Moon. The title of the game really tells you everything you need to know, you run a cafe and there are cute little dragons to take care of.
Fans of Harvest Moon should be excited, as the game is essentially a restaurant management sim that lets you learn new recipes and cook up dishes for guests, even growing your own crops and ingredients. At the same time, you can explore the world to gather new items, expand your menu, and increase your restaurant’s reputation. Of course, while you’re doing all this, you also have an adorable dragon to nurture. You’ll need to ensure your dragon is properly taken care of and has good nutrition in their diet, then before you know it, you’ll have a trusty companion to explore the world with.
Little Dragon Cafe will apparently have a larger emphasis on story than previous games Wada has made, and when we got a chance to play the game at E3 we fell in love with the title’s relaxing gameplay. If you want a break from all the dramatic world-ending threats in video games, Little Dragons Cafe could be the perfect game to help you kick back.
Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition
Best PS4 Games to Have on Your Radar in August 2018
Divinity: Original Sin 2 was one of the highest-rated games of 2017, and for many, a strong contender for Game of the Year. The truly amazing thing about Original Sin 2 is the freedom it gives you, the interactivity it has in solving problems however you want to. You can choose from a number of pre-made characters to play as, each of which have their own backstory, or you can create an entirely new hero. There’s a ton of story crammed into every aspect of Original Sin 2, with loads of lore to uncover, side quests to tackle, and different parties to build.
During battle you’re able to split up your party and individually control each member, leading to complex battle tactics like setting up ambushes or using flanking maneuvers. Maybe you want to put your ranged spellcaster up on a hill to rain death upon enemies while your fighters distract them, or lure the enemy into an area you can set on fire. The choice is up to you, and Original Sin 2 provides so many options on how to tackle combat, quests, and more. When we reviewed the game on PC we awarded it the coveted 5/5 score, so any RPG fans on console absolutely need to keep on eye out for this one.
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Best PS4 Games to Have on Your Radar in August 2018
The Yakuza series has had a meteoric rise in popularity in the west, thanks in no small part to the strong reception for Yakuza 0 and Kiwami last year, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life this year. The series has made a name for itself with its absurdist brand of comedy mixed with intense, dramatic Yakuza violence. Somehow, each Yakuza game manages to effortlessly flip its tone between hilarious and serious, and still work incredibly well. Yakuza Kiwami 2 follows up on last year’s Kiwami and completely remakes the original Yakuza 2, which many fans consider to be the best in the series.
The game is built on the Dragon Engine used in Yakuza 6, completely overhauling the game’s combat and graphics. The story remains the same, and Kiwami 2 actually uses the same camera angles and shots for cutscenes. Even though the main story remains the same there are new substories and mini-games added in, including an enhanced version of the Clan Creator mini-game in Yakuza 6. At the same time, an entirely new story segment has been added, letting players once again take control of Goro Majima. Just like the first Kiwami, Kiwami 2 is much more than just a visual upgrade for Yakuza 2, and both fans and newcomers alike should have it on their list. If you want to try the game out first, of course, there’s a demo on PSN right now that’s completely free.
