When the news of the new Kingdom Hearts titles broke out, fans were relentless. Square Enix had finally gone too far with their random word generator naming ways. But director of the series, Tetsuya Nomura, has taken to an interview with Famitsu to clear up what the number in Kingdom Hearts 2.8 means. Let’s attempt to understand it together. Nomura had this to say:

“This Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance compilation follows the previously HD work 2.5… and is worthy as taking its place as 2.6.”

“Because Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep is 0.1, this is how the 0.2 came to be put in the latest Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep. Thus, the 2.8 number appears from 2.6 plus 0 plus 0.2.”

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 was revealed at TGS this year and will release sometime in 2016. It will bring HD remakes of Kingdom Hearts HD Dream Drop Distance, Kingdom Hearts X: Back Cover, and Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage to the PS4.
