The shovel item in Link’s Awakening is a strange one as it’s one of the items in this game that is not given to you by any of the NPCs, nor is it found in a chest in a dungeon –it’s up to you to find out where it is and purchase it with your own money.

The shovel is used to dig up holes in the ground which can lead to finding hidden rupees, secret seashells, and even hearts.

To get the shovel, you have to buy it from the Town Tool Shop in Mabe Village (the starting town) for 200 rupees. It might sound like a lot, but compared to other items later on, it’s not too expensive.

If you find yourself having trouble getting that amount of rupees, just cut the large grass field in front of the shop until you get enough, or you can go to the Trendy Game and attempt to win rupees by playing the crane game.

To sum things up:

  1. Go to the Town Tool Shop in Mabe Village.

  2. Buy the shovel for 200 rupees.

  3. Equip the shovel by assigning it to one of the buttons in the menu.
