Sims 4: How to Change Your Sims’ Traits

The Sims 4 once again allows you to shape their personalities with different traits. If you’ve found that you don’t like the traits you chose, though, fear not. As there’s actually two ways you can change your Sims’ traits in The Sims 4, both by cheating, and using a Re-Traiting potion, which we’ll explain how to get below.

How to Change Your Traits With Cheats in The Sims 4

You can open up the cheat console by hitting CTRL+Shift+C and then typing “testingcheats on” (without the quotation marks). On consoles, you need to press all of the shoulder buttons at the same time; that’s R1, R2, L1, L2 on PlayStation 4 and PS5, and RB, RT, LB, LT on Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S.

Hit enter and then type “cas.fulleditmode” (again without the quotations) and hit enter again.

Hit ESC to close the cheat console, and once you do that, you’ll be able to Shift+Click on any sim to edit anything about them in Create a Sim as though you were first making them.

So go ahead and Shift+Click them and hit “Modify in CAS” and you will be able to change their traits (as well as any other thing you’d normally change when you first create them).

With this, you can even change their age, looks, gender, voice, and more. Careful not to change anything you don’t want to!

Changing Your Sims’ Traits with a Re-Traiting Potion

The Re-Traiting Potion can be purchased from the Rewards Store for 5,000 Satisfaction Points. Satisfaction Points can either be earned by cheating: sims.give_satisfaction_points # (replace the # with the amount of points you want your Sim to have and hit enter), or by completing Whims with your Sim!

Whims need to be turned on following an update that turned them off by default. To do this, go to ‘Options’ > ‘Game Play’ > ‘Show Whims.’ You’ll now be able to complete Whims for doing everyday activities that your Sims want you to do, and completing these will earn you Satisfaction Points.

After racking up 5,000 Satisfaction Points, click on the Aspiration tab in the upper right-hand corner and click the Present Icon. You’ll now be able to select the ‘Re-Traiting Potion’ from the ‘Potions’ category and change your Sims’ traits in The Sims 4.

Congratulations! Your boring ol’ sim will be all new with some fresh personality. This is perfect if you want to change them up as they age, to roleplay some life-changing experiences. Especially as new packs come out, you’ll want to try those new traits out!
