Shouts – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Recommended Videos

It doesn’t take long to encounter a shout in Skyrim. Typically your first is found deep in Bleak Falls Barrow, either by following the Bleak Falls Barrow Quest from the court wizard in Dragonsreach, or by following The Golden Claw from the shop merchant at the Riverwood Trader. At the end of the dungeon, you’ll encounter a very intense curved wall. Approach it, and you’ll learn the first word of your new shout.

To use shouts, though, you’ll need to defeat a dragon. If you continue following the Dragonsreach quest line, you’ll encounter a dragon along a mission. If not, well, there’s plenty of dragons out there in the world. Once you kill one, you’ll automatically absorb its soul.

Now head to your Magic menu and scroll down to Shouts. Imbue the desired shout with a dragon soul, and equip it. Once this is done, you can press R2/RB to activate it (or R1 if you’re playing Skyrim: Special Edition on PS4). Keep in mind that shouts have their own cooldown, so you can’t use them infinitely.

Now you know exactly how to use shouts. Find a word, get a soul, equip, and hit R1/RB. Now get out there and start yelling at stuff.
