Spelunky: How to Use the Teleporter

Nobody can stop you now!
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Teleporters in Spelunky are incredibly useful items. Not only can they help you avoid obstacles and enemies that are causing you problems, but they’re also highly recommended if you’re looking to speedrun the game. Here’s what you need to know about the teleporter so you can use it properly in Spelunky.

It’s worth noting from the start that a teleporter is pretty random in the way it works. It’s important to understand the mechanics behind it so you don’t go ahead and kill yourself.

You can use a teleporter by equipping one and then simply pressing the action button and pressing in the direction you are facing/ want to go. The teleporter will then work its magic and will appear a random number of tiles away in the direction you held down on the d-pad. The number of tiles will be somewhere between four and eight, though there is no way to determine how far exactly it will take you.

Where the teleporter gets tricky, however, is if the destination tile is a solid block. In this case, the teleporter will try and move you up to three tiles above the location in the hope that you’ll find some safe ground. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always, and can warp you into a solid block, instakilling you in the process.

If you’re wanting to get around quicker in a general playthrough of Spelunky, we recommend saving up and picking up the jetpack instead for a bit of a higher price. These are much easier and safer to use than a teleporter. On the other hand, if you’re going for a speedrun, then we’d suggest trying out the teleporter a few times before going out on your timed run. An avoidable death is the last thing you need in the middle of your run.

That’s all there is to using a teleporter. Now be safe, explorers!
