Skul The Hero Slayer: 5 Tips & Tricks for Beginners

Buy Upgrades Early

Skul: The Hero Slayer – 5 Tips & Tricks

It can be really tempting to hold off on purchasing any upgrades in order to save up for some of the bigger, more notable power-ups.

The free respawn in particular is extremely tempting, but at a cost of 3000 Dark Quartz, it’s going to be a long time until you can earn enough to make that payment. You know what will help you get the extra cash? Winning runs — or at least, getting a little further in them.

The basic physical and magic damage upgrades, reduced skill cooldown, etc. are all incredible upgrades early on that can be purchased for as low as 10-20 quartz. They do get pricier with every purchase, but they will also help your run immensely.

Don’t sleep on upgrades, be smart about your purchases but don’t be afraid to make them early on.

Try New Skulls

Skul: The Hero Slayer – 5 Tips & Tricks

This one will kind of happen naturally as each run will randomly spawn different skulls for you, making it likely you won’t get the same skull every time.

However, it can be really easy to fall into the habit of picking your favorite skull every time it becomes available.

It is good to try out new skulls when given the chance, so not only will you have a better understanding of how you can make the most out of them when you don’t have any other options, but also because it gives you the chance to realize which skulls are actually your favorites.

Skul: The Hero Slayer is filled with fun and unique skulls, so make sure to check them all out.

Upgrade Skulls

Skul: The Hero Slayer – 5 Tips & Tricks

This tip isn’t just for the new players picking up the game now that Skul: The Hero Slayer is finally out of Early Access, it is also helpful for those making a return to the game now that it’s finished.

The release of the game’s full version added many things, but one of them is the ability to upgrade skulls by interacting with an NPC named Arachne. You won’t have to go out of your way to find her as she spawns at least once in every world.

Bones can be obtained when given to you by an NPC, or by destroying unequiped skulls. If you don’t want to use a skull, make sure to destroy it to get the bones.

Now, here’s how the upgrades work. Each skull falls into a certain tier of common, rare, unique, and legendary. You can use your saved up bones to upgrade a skull to the next highest tier, with each tier costing more than the last.

Upgrades make skulls stronger and can even add additional abilities, so don’t forget to upgrade your skulls when given the chance.

Learn Item Synergies

Skul: The Hero Slayer – 5 Tips & Tricks

Skul: The Hero Slayer Tips and Tricks

One of my biggest faults when starting out this game was my habit of grabbing items without really reading what they do.

Items can offer a variety of perks from increased damage, boosted HP, or reduced cooldown time, however, they go a bit beyond that.

When stacking items with the same benefit, you can create an incredibly powerful run. Primarily using a Power-type skull? Grab some items that increase stats specifically for Power skulls. If your skull deals mostly Physical damage, then it might be best to swap your magic-buffing items for physical ones.

There are even some more in-depth upgrades to keep an eye out for when grabbing items.

Every item you find will have up to two inscriptions adding additional benefits to that item. Some inscription types include Sorcery, Heart, Volcano, etc.

Each item has fixed inscriptions so they’ll be the same every time and can be seen below the item description. You can see all of your active inscriptions and how many items you have with them on the left-hand side of your character screen like in the screenshot above.

If you have multiple items with the same inscription, they will stack and will provide better benefits for every item with that inscription, but to a certain point as each inscription has a stacking limit.

For example, having five spirits fulfills the requirements for the Fairytale inscription, which will then spawn a very powerful ally, the Spirit King Oberon.

Learn Enemy and Boss Patterns

Skul: The Hero Slayer – 5 Tips & Tricks

Enemies have attack patterns they like to stick to, and it’ll be a major advantage to your health bar if you take the time to learn them.

For example, there are evil Ents with pink leaves that occasionally release a poisonous gas. You’ll know when they are about to attack as they glow with a yellow outline right before they make their move.

Bosses also have attack patterns and learning them can save you a lot of damage. We call this a tip, but honestly its more of a must if you hope to secure some winning runs.

Bonus tip: Doors

Skul: The Hero Slayer – 5 Tips & Tricks

This is just a little basic bonus tip. Know which doors lead to where. There are five doors in the game; the green ones covered in skulls will grant you a new skull as a reward, the basic gold doors will offer gold, the doors covered in chests and weapons will offer an item, purple doors lead to shops, and the big door at the end of a world will lead you to the boss.

It’s helpful to know where you’re going to get what you want.

There you have five tips and tricks for Skul: The Hero Slayer. Now get slaying!
