Lara Croft is back for her latest adventure in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and it marks a return to the lush, exotic jungle environments that were a hallmark of both the original games and the first 2013 reboot of the series. After a brief tutorial mission, you’ll find yourself thrown into the middle of a hostile jungle after Lara and co are forced to make a crash landing. Separated from her gear and supplies, Lara will need to locate the crash site and find or forge her essential tools. One such essential tool is her trusty knife, which is used extensively in the game for everything, from stealth takedowns to severing ropes. It’s the very thing she needs to progress at this point of the game, but you’re probably wondering where to find the knife and how to sharpen it since Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn’t exactly spell that out for you very obviously. Fear not, we’ve got you covered.

The clue to finding the makeshift knife is in the title; you’re not actually looking for a knife, but rather, looking for something to forge a knife out of.

What you’ll need to do is locate the aircraft engine and approach the propeller: that’s your knife. After interacting with the propeller, the engine will drop into the water and you’ll have to dive down to retrieve it. But now that you’ve found the base material, you’ll need to sharpen it so that it’s actually able to cut through ropes.

To do so, collect the resources located in the various crates around the area, and then cut out some animal hides from the carcasses that are stricken around (you can also kill the Tapirs and harvest them that way). Once you have your materials, head back to base camp and select the inventory menu, then sharpen the weapon via the crafting function.
