If you’ve played any of the Souls games before then you’ll be familiar with the principle of collecting dozens of items that don’t immediately appear to have any use. FromSoftware’s latest game, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, continues this tradition. Here’s how to get Sake and what it’s used for in the game.

What It’s Used For in Sekiro

In brief, sake is a key item that is used to unlock dialog conversation with NPCs. Yes, to encourage a little more conversation with some of the game’s characters you’ll need to loosen their lips with a drop of sake.

If you’ve come across sake during your playthrough, make sure you hold onto it because you’ll be able to backtrack to speak with NPCs and open new dialog with them.

There are several different types of sake in Sekiro, and they’re each given to specific NPCs:

  • Unrefined – Can be given to the Sculptor, as well as Isshin Ashina
  • Dragonspring – Give to the Sculptor
  • Ashina – Give to either Emma or the Sculptor
  • Monkey Booze – Give to the Sculptor, Emma, or Isshin

How to Get Sake

Unrefined sake can be found in the following locations in Sekiro:

  • Obtained from killing Juzo the Drunkard
  • Obtained from killing Tokujiro the Glutton
  • Obtained from Isshin Ashina after defeating Genichiro Ashina

Monkey Booze can be found in the following locations in Sekiro:

  • After defeating a large group of monkeys in the Sunken Valley Passage past the Riven Cave Sculptor’s Idol.
  • Approach to Senpou Temple, in the hands of a statue in a side room nearby the White Pinwheel, by the barred door which leads to the Demon Bell.
  • A skull next to a monkey enemy in the Ashina Depths (grapple upwards shortly after fighting Snake Eyes Shirahagi).

Dragonspring sake is sold by the Merchant: Exiled Memorial Mob at Mibu Village for 1000 Sen.
