As soon as you start exploring your first Biome in Returnal, you’ll run into an enemy type that has a red shield. In order to defeat this enemy, you have to get your hands on a specific item called the Aptropian Blade.

The Aptropian Blade is Returnal’s melee weapon, allowing you to get up close and personal to deal out some damage to your opponents. You’ll unlock this weapon by naturally progressing through the game’s first Biome. Don’t worry about missing it, as you can’t actually complete the level without getting it.

As soon as you do unlock the Aptropian Blade, you’ll also never lose it. The item will permanently be a part of your character from that point on.

In addition to being able to use it as a melee weapon, you’ll also find that this blade can be used to destroy walls that hide useful items, making it one of the most important weapons in the game.
