Is Resident Evil 2 PS4 Pro Compatible?
Resident Evil 2 was a pretty game for its time, but it doesn’t quite compare to how gorgeous the new remake looks. The question is: can we make the game look even better with the power of the PS4 Pro. In other words, is Resident Evil 2 PS4 Pro compatible?
Firstly, let’s look back at just how much of a graphical leap the remake is over the original.
The 1998 PlayStation release, like almost every game released on the system, ran at a resolution of 240p. This goes the same for the Nintendo 64 port that released a year later.
A few months after the Nintendo 64 port, Resident Evil 2 made its way to the Dreamcast. The generational leap was obvious, as the Dreamcast version could run at an enhanced definition of 480p.
The GameCube port of 2003, however, was less impressive. Despite being on a more powerful console, it could only run in interlaced mode, otherwise known as 480i.
This arguably makes the Dreamcast version the best version of Resident Evil 2. Until now, that is. What you’ll see on PS4 is truly a step up.
It could be argued that the new Resident Evil 2 is such a radical departure from the original that it’s really its own beast. But that doesn’t change the fact that this is the first time we’ll be seeing some of these characters and locales in such a high level of detail.
On the regular PS4, the game runs at 1080p with a variable frame rate up to 60 FPS. Although, the truth of the matter is it never comes close to that target.
Running on a base console, Digital Foundry found the frame rate ranges in the 40s and 50s.
Playing on a PS4 Pro has two benefits over the regular PS4.
Firstly, the game runs at 1620p on the more powerful console. It’s not a full 4K, by any means, but it is a big step up from 1080p.
Secondly, on the PS4 Pro, Resident Evil 2 still has the same 60 FPS target as the base console. However, it manages to stay at that mark most of the time. There are occasional dropped frames here and there, but it is a much more stable experience overall on the Pro.
