Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee are finally out and it’s likely that millions and millions of players around the world are journeying through nostalgia. Let’s Go for many is a return to the very first region they ever explored. For others, it might be a first-time trek through the Kanto region. Regardless, there are a number of changes to the traditional formula which means both parties have plenty to learn. Here’s how to rename Pokemon in Let’s Go.

If you’ve played Pokemon Red, Blue or Green (Japanese-exclusive), or even Yellow, you probably think you know the answer to this. But, then again, you’re here which means you likely don’t. In past games, to change the name of a Pokemon, you need to find a special NPC somewhere in the game.

In the first Kanto games, to change your pocket monster’s name, you need to head to Lavender town and find the Name Rater. Once you find him, after finishing a quick conversation, you’ll be given the opportunity to nickname, or change the name of, your Pokemon.

While there might be something to the journey one must make to actually change the name of their favorite pocket monster, Let’s Go was made to make newcomers feel comfortable.

This is certainly the case with renaming Pokemon and that’s because no longer must you go to Lavender town to find a Name Rater. Instead, you’re able to rename your party members right from the start.

To do that, you first need to press X on your Nintendo Switch. When you press X, the menu will be brought up. Once at the main menu, find the Party option. Select it and you should be brought to the menu showcasing your party. Here, choose the Pokemon you wish to rename and press A. This will bring up the Change Name option. Select it.

Now, you’re free to rename your Pokemon whatever you wish, so long as it’s a name Nintendo and Game Freak approve of. Don’t sweat this decision too much. If you don’t end up liking the name, it’s okay and that’s because you can rename your ‘mon as often as you’d like.
