While you get a variety of customization options at the start of the game, when you’re creating your character, what you choose doesn’t matter all that much.

Since the game is in first-person, you don’t see your own character very often. Only when you leave the controller for a while without pausing will you see yourself in a cinematic sweep of the surrounding area.

You can get more clothes and outfits for your companions though, and you will see them as you explore, complete quests, and fight off enemies.

How to Change Clothes & Get More Outfits in Outer Worlds

To change your own character’s clothes, press the touchpad if you’re on PS4 (View button on Xbox One) to bring up the character menu.

From there, head to the Inventory tab, press R2/RT to bring up the Armor sub-tab, and then select the armor you want to equip, and then press X/A to finalize it. There are also helmet and gear categories for you to change up too.

For your companions, you need to cycle over to their own tab from the character menu. Here, you’ll be able to follow the same process to switch out their gear.

To actually get more outfits in The Outer Worlds, you’ll find most of it from looting enemies you’ve killed, but you can also buy armor from vendors.

Vendors from different factions will sell different items and you’ll be able to get items cheaper if you increase your reputation with a faction.
