NieR: Automata – Getting Ending Y

Recommended Videos

There are a total of 26 endings available in NieR: Automata. Five of those are main story endings, and the remaining 21 are joke endings. You don’t have to unlock all the joke endings if you don’t want to, but getting them all will reward you with a trophy. Of all the available endings in the game, Ending Y is probably the toughest and trickiest one to get.

Do note that the requirements for unlocking Ending Y contain a few minor spoilers about the game’s secret superboss, so look away if you want to go in fresh.

To unlock Ending Y, you need to complete the side mission “Emil’s Memories.” This is unlocked after clearing the Forest Zone story mission and interacting with Emil at least once when he’s driving around town like a maniac. Go back to the shopping center and interact with the white flower in the corner. Emil will then ask you to look for Lunar Tears. Complete this side mission.

Next, you’ll need to find every single weapon in the game and upgrade all of them fully. You can refer to our complete weapons guide here, if you need help finding them all. You’ll also need to locate the Master Swordsmith Masamune to get your weapons to the max level.

After upgrading everything, go back to the shopping center to find Emil. He’ll make a comment about how you’ve grown strong and you don’t need his help anymore. He’ll dash away from you, and the Pod will track his location in the Desert Zone. Head to the marker to trigger Emil’s superboss fight. Near the end of the fight, one of the Emil heads will start to self-destruct. To get Ending Y, just let the head explode.
