Before you can whittle away the hours building and exploring in Minecraft, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got the most up to date version of the game. Every once in a while, Microsoft releases a new update to introduce new features, change the algorithm, or make a quick bug fix. Here’s how to update Minecraft on Xbox One and Xbox 360 so that you’re not missing out.

Xbox 360

Put simply, the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft will prompt you automatically if the game needs to be updated. In most cases, you’re going to boot the game, be prompted to install the latest version, and then simply follow the instructions for the update to go ahead and download.

Where it can get slightly tricky is if you don’t actually have an Xbox Live account, which is seemingly required. Do note that by Xbox Live, it isn’t requiring you to have purchased the Gold package.

Still, if you either don’t want an account or aren’t able to get it working for some reason there is a way to install the latest version of Minecraft without having an Xbox Live account.

When you boot Minecraft the game prompts you to either ‘Play on Xbox Live,’ or ‘Play Offline.’ To update, click Play on Xbox Live, even you do not have a profile. The game will then prompt you to either create an account or download a profile. Click ‘Download a Profile,’ which will then force another prompt that asks you to download the latest update if you do not already have it. The update will then begin.

Once that is installed you can restart the process, selecting ‘Play Offline’ as you normally would and you’ll be playing the latest version.

Xbox One

Things are much more streamlined on Xbox One — though it does actually require you to manually go into ‘My Apps & Games,’ select Minecraft and press the more options button.

From the list, select ‘Manage game & add-ons, ‘then ‘Updates.’ Any updates will be available from this section. If no updates are available here, your game is fully updated and you’re good to go.
