The first thing to know about this side quest is that it can only be completed once you have reached a certain point in Skyward Sword HD. Specifically, you’ll need to have beat the Imprisoned boss for the first time. If you’re not at that point yet, keep playing the main story until you finish that part.

After you’ve done that, you’ll notice a change in the Knight Academy at nighttime. There will be a voice coming from the bathroom asking for help. Specifically, the voice inside the bathroom is asking for someone to bring them paper, and any kind will do. I guess we’ve all been there before.

Next, head to your room and make it morning by sleeping in the bed. You’ll see Cawlin in the hallway of the Knight Academy with a thought bubble over his head. Talk to him and find out he has a heartfelt letter written on a piece of paper to be delivered to a girl named Karane to profess his love to her.

Now, you have a choice here. It’s paper. The voice in the restroom really needs some paper. On the other hand, Cawlin begs you not to let his letter be used as toilet paper and make sure it is delivered to Karane so that she will know how he really feels.

You will get the same exact reward no matter who you choose to deliver the paper to, but you can only choose one.

If you choose the voice in the bathroom, simply make it nighttime, and return to the bathroom. You’ll see a creepy hand sticking out of the toilet. Talk to the hand, and hand over the paper.

Go back to your bed to make it daytime, talk to Cawlin where he was before, and he’ll dash off. Then, go find him in Groose’s room and talk to him again. Finally, go back to your bed to make it nighttime, and go to Groose’s room one more time. The creepy hand will be there with Cawlin. Love finds a way. Talk to him to claim your five Gratitude Crystals.

If you prefer to fulfill Cawlin’s request honestly, all you need to do is find Karane in the Knight Academy classroom. You overhear her talking about how she wants Pipit to notice her. Oops. She thinks the letter could be from Pipit and gets excited. Double oops.

If you choose to give her the letter from Cawlin, she’ll read it and laugh at the idea of going out with him. You can then go upstairs and talk to Pipit and tell him how Karane feels. Finally, head back to Karane in the classroom to see her talking to Cawlin. Read through the cutscene and see who ends up with who. You’ll get your five Gratitude Crystals for helping two lovers connect.
