How to Craft Items in The Last of Us 2

To start, crafting in The Last of Us 2 is done by pressing the Touchpad.

This will bring up the crafting menu, where you can create items at most any point in the game where you have control of a character. What you can craft, however, is limited to the items you’ve found and in turn, learned the recipes for.

For example, you won’t be able to craft a stun bomb until you’ve found one while scavenging, and you won’t be able to craft arrows until you’ve found the bow.

Once you’ve found said items though, the recipe to craft them will be available in the lower portion of the screen and you can select them for crafting by moving toward them with the left analog stick.

Likewise, each item will require two of six possible components to make. The components you can find include rags, alcohol, canisters, explosives, bindings and blades, and you’ll need full pieces – shown by the number below the component and no light-grey shading over the item – of each component to make any given item.

Once you have the necessary components, select the item you wish to craft and hold down the X Button. After a short time, you’ll create the item and it’ll be added to your inventory.

Time needed: 1 minute

So, to recap how to craft items in The Last of Us 2:

  1. Press the Touchpad

This will open up the crafting menu.

  2. Select the item you wish to craft

This is done by moving the left analog stick toward the item, and the components needed to craft it will be made visible when you do.

  3. Hold down the X Button

After a short period of time, the item will be created and added to your inventory.

How to Craft Faster & Make More Items at Once

This covers the basics of crafting in The Last of Us 2, but you can also make the mechanic even more useful by upgrading the necessary skills.

As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock new skill trees you can upgrade by using supplements found throughout levels. Some of these skill trees provide you with crafting bonuses that range from faster crafting speeds to making multiple items instead of just one.

Granted, investing in these skills will mean you won’t be able to purchase other bonuses, but doing so can prove useful in the later stages of the game where resources are more scarce and you’ll need to make items during combat.

As such, if you’ve got supplements to spare, it’s highly recommended that you look over said skills as you unlock them to see if they’re something you wish to have at your disposal.

That should cover everything there is to know about how to craft items in The Last of Us 2. For more on the game, check out our guide wiki. It has info on a variety of topics like how to beat the Rat King and whether there are multiple endings.
