How Old You Need to be to Play Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is one the hottest games of 2018, scoring a 5/5 rating in our review earlier last month. As such, you might be wondering whether you’re eligible to play it. Here’s how old you need to be to play Red Dead Redemption 2.
If you’re not familiar with Rockstar Games, they have a reputation for producing gritty, violent, and sometimes controversial video games. Most famously, their Grand Theft Auto series has been banned in several countries for the depiction of sex, crime, racism, and tough social issues that many developers shy away from.
Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t quite as bold, and while sometimes brutal, isn’t anywhere near as shocking. But this is by no means a game for children. It is rated as M for mature, requiring that you’re 17+ to purchase the game.
If you’re not up to speed with ESRB rating, M describes the product as one that ” May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.” This is the second highest rating behind AO (Adults Only).
Of the suggested themes listed under M, Red Dead Redemption 2 probably only qualifies for violence and language. There are some fairly gory slow-motion death animations and fairly frequent profanity, but there’s not much in the way of sexual content.
However, you will not be able to purchase Red Dead Redemption 2 at retail if you are less than 17 years old. Here’s Gamestop’s policy on the matter:
All GameStop and EB Games employees enforce our store policy with respect to games rated M (Mature) by the ESRB. We DO NOT sell, reserve, or offer Mature-rated games to customers under 17 years of age.
