Chthonic Bonds: How to Spawn and Romance Thanatos in Hades

The big bad that needs loving.

I remember my first thirty runs through the Underworld: I was constantly looking over my shoulder for the God of Death, wondering if I had done something wrong to offend him. Thanatos is easily one of the most elusive and interesting characters in the game, but he is also one of the most misunderstood.

If you have been struggling to get him to show up or you are stuck at a locked heart in his social menu. I have done the heavy lifting for you by digging into the game scripts to find out exactly how he works.

When will Thanatos first appear in your game?

Before you can start giving him gifts, you have to actually meet him. I have seen a lot of players get frustrated because he hasn’t shown up in their first twenty runs, but there are actually a few hard requirements in the code that you have to hit first. You won’t see him until you have met at least one of Megaera’s sisters, Alecto or Tisiphone, who only start appearing after you have beaten Meg a handful of times.

Once you have checked that box, your very first meeting with him is hard-coded to happen in Elysium. In my experience, this usually happens around chamber 30 or later during a run. After that first scripted meeting, he becomes a regular part of the encounter pool and can show up in Tartarus or Asphodel too.

The hidden numbers that control his spawn rate

Search results and old guides often say his appearance is totally random, but that isn’t quite true. The game uses a weighted system to decide which encounter you get when you walk into a room. Based on the internal data, here is the breakdown of how the game decides if he shows up:

  • In Elysium, he has a roughly 10 percent chance of appearing in any standard combat chamber.
  • In Tartarus, he cannot appear until you hit a biome depth of 9, which basically means he only shows up in the final few rooms before the boss.
  • In Asphodel, he can show up as early as the second chamber.
  • I have noticed that he will never show up in the same run where you meet a major NPC like Sisyphus or Eurydice for the first time.

Why you might be accidentally blocking his appearances

I have talked to so many people who think their game is glitched, but they were actually just choosing the wrong doors. If you want to see Thanatos more often, you need to understand that he is technically an encounter, and certain rooms are forbidden from having encounters.

To maximize your chances, I recommend following these rules:

  • Avoid Trial of the Gods rooms, because two gods fighting over you is enough for the game to handle at once.
  • Stay away from mini-boss rooms, marked with a skull on the door, because those have their own set scripts.
  • Don’t expect him to show up in fountain rooms or shops.
  • I have found that he is much more likely to show up in rooms offering a Centaur Heart as a reward, though the math says he can appear in rooms with darkness or gems too.

Pro tips to win the kill contest and get that extra heart

When Thanatos does show up, he challenges you to a contest to see who can kill more enemies. If you win or even just tie his score, you get a Centaur Heart which adds 25 to your max health for the rest of the run. This is huge for high heat runs where every bit of health counts.

Here is how I consistently beat him:

  • Prioritize the small fry: A giant armored chariot and a tiny little soul count for the same one point, so don’t waste time on the big guys while he is clearing out the weak ones.
  • Steal his kills: Thanatos has a big purple circle attack that takes about three seconds to go off. I always watch for that circle and try to dash in and finish off the enemies inside it before it explodes.
  • Exploit the Exalted: In Elysium, the physical form and the soul that pops out both count as a point. If you take out the soul, you get an easy second point that he often ignores.
  • Let him soften the armor: His attacks ignore armor entirely, so if there is a massive armored enemy, I let him mark it with his scythe and then I jump in for the final blow.

How to unlock the romance hearts and get the best gifts

To get on his good side, you are going to need a lot of Nectar. The first time you give him a bottle, he gives you the Pierced Butterfly keepsake. This is one of my favorite items for a Hades character guide because it gives you a permanent damage boost every time you clear a room without taking damage; it’s one of the reasons we love this game.

To reach the romance stage, follow this path:

  • Give him 6 bottles of Nectar to fill up his initial heart gauge.
  • Complete his favor: This isn’t a specific quest you can track in a menu. Instead, it is a narrative event where you have to win or tie a contest against him and then talk to him in the House of Hades.
  • After the favor is done, you can start giving him Ambrosia.
  • Once you hit 10 hearts, you will get a scene in your bedroom where you can choose to be just friends or something more.

Mastering the Underworld economy at the Wretched Broker

Farming for Nectar and Ambrosia can be a grind, but I have found that you can speed it up if you know how to use the Wretched Broker in the lounge. While you can always trade 10 Nectar for 1 Ambrosia, that is actually a terrible deal.

Instead, I always look for these limited time offers:

  • 500 Darkness for 1 Ambrosia: This is the best deal in the game once you have your mirror mostly filled out.
  • 10 Gemstones for 1 Nectar: I usually have thousands of these lying around, so I trade them whenever I can.
  • 15 Chthonic Keys for 1 Titan Blood: While not directly for romance, this helps you save your Ambrosia for Thanatos instead of using it to upgrade weapons.

Polyamory and the Megaera dynamic

One thing I love about this game is that you don’t have to choose between your love interests. If you decide to romance both Thanatos and Megaera, you won’t get a jealous blow-up like in other games. In fact, there is a special scene where all three of you can discuss the relationship and essentially enter a polyamorous dynamic. It is a very mature take on romance that makes the characters feel much more human. If you are stuck on her path too, you might want to check out my Megaera romance guide to see what she needs to open up. Just keep playing, keep gifting, and eventually, the God of Death will be waiting for you in that hallway near the Administrative Chamber.
