Rockstar’s iconic open-world remains one of the most popular games in the world over a decade since its launch, but there’s now even more reason to go back and play it following the launch of a new and improved version. Here’s how to get GTA V on PS5 & Xbox Series X if you’re planning on doing exactly that.

The first thing to understand about GTA 5 on PS5 and Series X|S is that it isn’t actually an upgrade in the conventional sense. Instead, it’s actually a separate product from the base PS4/Xbox One version on your hard drive that you will need to purchase and install.

For that reason, you won’t find any sort of upgrade option from the original game’s menu.

Getting the New GTA V Versions on PS5 & Xbox Series X|S

The only way to get the enhanced version is to visit the storefront for whichever platform you want to play the game on and buy it from there. It is available for current-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles, including PS5, Xbox Series X|S.

Do note that the new version is discounted from launch until June 14. The standalone PS5 GTA Online package is available to play for free for three months following the game’s launch (requires PS Plus subscription).

How to Transfer Save Game to GTA V on PS5 & Series X

You can transfer campaign and online progress from your previous game to the new enhanced package so that you do not have to start your entire adventure again. This is taken care of via Rockstar Games’ cloud store functionality; you just need to pause the game, cycle to the Game option, and then click on ‘Upload Save Game.’
