FIFA 21: How to Upgrade PS4 to PS5 Version

The PS5 version of FIFA 21 has finally arrived, bringing new visuals and adaptive triggers to EA Sports’ game. Since it’s later in the year than the usual release though, many of you have likely picked up the last-gen version to upgrade for free to the new one. If you’re looking to do that but are struggling, we’ve got everything you need to know about how to upgrade from PS4 to the PS5 version of FIFA 21.

Before we get into the details, it’s worth noting that you can upgrade your PS4 version of FIFA 21 to the PS5 version whether you’re playing the physical or digital version and to either version of the new console.

How to Upgrade PS4 to PS5 Version of FIFA 21

Upgrading to PS5 Version From Digital PS4 Version

You will be able to simply search for FIFA 21 on the PlayStation Store, where it will say than a free upgrade is available. Simply select download and you’ll be prompted to download the new version.

It will initially say that the PS5 version is 95GB or so, but don’t worry, it isn’t. That figure includes both versions of the game and you’ll be able to delete or choose do not install the PS4 version later on. In actual fact, the PS5 version is a few GB smaller than the PS4 version.

Upgrading From Physical PS4 Version

If you’ve bought the PlayStation 5 with a disc-drive, you can simply put the PS4 version of FIFA 21 into your console, at which point you’ll be asked to download the digital version of the PS5 edition. Every time you want to play the PS5 version, you’ll need to insert the PS4 disc into your console.

If you’ve bought the physical version of FIFA 21 and have the digital only version of the PS5, things are a little more tricky. You’d expect it to not be possible but it actually is, provided you do the legwork.

According to EA’s website, “you will need to contact EA support at help.ea.com to validate your purchase using your EA account information to receive your free upgrade.” Just follow the steps there and EA should allow you to download the PS5 upgrade of FIFA 21 on your new console.
