How to Block in Elden Ring

Blocking will oftentimes reduce the damage you receive from a hit, or at least partially when compared to taking the full brunt of an attack, which makes it vital if you are looking to keep fighting. The ability to block is not just limited to shields, but also for those that are two-handing a weapon.

Blocking in Elden Ring

To block, simply hold the L1/left bumper and your character will hold up the shield or weapon.

Of course, you cannot do this indefinitely, as this will slow down the regeneration of your stamina, and a chunk will be removed every time you get hit as well.

Depending on your shield type, not all damage will be mitigated, so be sure to check your equipment to ensure you always have the right defense for whatever enemies that come next.
