This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

As you’d expect from a Doom game, Eternal is full of crazy weapons that are perfect for ripping demons apart. It’s also vital to use the right one for each enemy type. So that you can be using the right element of your arsenal, here’s everything you need to know about how to switch weapons in Doom Eternal.

Switching weapons is important because certain weapons are better against specific enemies than others. For example, the Pulse Rifle is useful for breaking the shield of enemies like Doom Hunters, and it seems easier to take out Cacodemon with your rocket launcher.

Also, it’s worth noting that you don’t start Doom Eternal with all of the game’s weapons. You’ll slowly get more and more as you progress, having to deal with just the Combat Shotgun from the start.

How to Switch Weapons in Doom Eternal

There are two ways to do so. The quickest is to just tap R1 if you’re on PS4 (RB on Xbox One), which will just change you back to the weapon you were using last.

Alternatively, you can hold the same button to bring up the weapon wheel. You can then use the right stick to select the gun you want to use. Once you’ve highlighted the one you want, let go of the buttons and you’ll switch weapons.

As you can see from that screenshot, the wheel will be completely full by the end of Doom Eternal and it’ll be split into four different colors, each of which using a particular type of ammo. The shotguns in the top, in yellow, both use slugs, with the purple ones using energy.

You can then see below them how much ammo you have. As the Rocket Launcher has on the right there, the icon will turn red when you have no ammo yet.
