Avengers: Infinity War Post-Credits Scene Explained

Keeping up the tradition of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Avengers: Infinity War features a tease to Marvel’s upcoming films, during the credits. In Infinity War, there is only one scene that plays after the very end of the credits.

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers for the ending of Avengers Infinity War below. You have been warned.

At the end of Avengers Infinity War, Thanos’ ultimate plan is realized: with a single click, half of the universe’s inhabitants are wiped out. Many heroes fade to dust, leaving just a fraction of the Avengers behind.

The post-credits scene seemingly takes place as this is happening, back in America, with Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Fury explains that the universe is in the most dire state that it has ever been in. Suddenly, cars and helicopters are crashing around them, then random people start turning to dust, followed by Maria herself. Upon seeing this, Nick Fury rushes back to their vehicle, grabs a communication device, and manages to send one last transmission before being vaporized himself. The camera zooms into the communication device, revealing a strange star-shaped insignia.

This logo may be familiar to fans of the Marvel comic books: it’s the insignia of Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel. In the comics, she originally went by the name of Ms. Marvel, but since changed to Captain Marvel in 2012 following the death of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell. She is said to be one of the most powerful Avengers, harnessing the ability of superhuman strength, and is able to fly, fire explosive blasts from her finger tips, as well as many other superhuman things.

Fans of the Marvel films may have heard of Captain Marvel as their is a Captain Marvel film set to release on March 8, 2019, starring Brie Larson. This will follow Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is releasing later this year, and will precede the fourth Avengers film that is planned for May 3, 2019. The insignia flashing on Fury’s communication device links the end of Avengers Infinity War to the upcoming Captain Marvel film. It’s likely that Fury is requesting the aid of Carol Danvers to help fix the destruction that has been caused by Thanos.
